Joseph* suffered an head injury as a result of an accident at his factory.
When Joseph first came to The La Jolla Center for Neurofeedback, the cognitive problems
stemming from his injury had caused him to lose his job and were putting a strain
on his marriage. He felt hopeless and frustrated.
Dr. Burgess performed a series of assessments to determine the nature of Joseph's
disabilities. While the injury had caused a reduction in some of Joseph's mental
abilities, it became clear that his emotional state was also contributing to his
problems functioning. Through psychotherapy, Joseph and his wife learned to accept what had
happened to him and to find new strategies to cope with his disability, like
writing things down and using mnemonic devices. Through taking active control
of his life, Joseph was able to regain some of his ability to function. He no longer feels hopeless
or helpless, and he hopes to look for a new job soon.
